Robert Edwin (Bob) Janes, Jr. died peacefully early last Tuesday morning, while in hospice care at Cottesmore, Gig Harbor.
Born in Tacoma, Bob spent his childhood summers on the beach in Purdy where his family eventually settled. Later, he joined the Navy and met his future wife in Gig Harbor while home on leave; they were married in 1961.
Bob served for 20 years as a submarine specialist in the navy, retiring as senior chief sonar technician in 1975. During his service, Janes and his young family lived in San Diego, Honolulu, Charleston, Key West, and Groton. Bob and Marcia then returned to Gig Harbor with their kids in 1975, where he worked in real estate and for the U.S. Postal Service until his full retirement in 1995.
Bob was an expert salmon fisherman and was also a self-taught fly fisherman. Besides salmon and trout, Janes pulled in several varieties of local fish from each of his naval stops, even harvesting lobster during his three years in Key West. He would often deliver freshly caught salmon to surprised and delighted friends and relatives throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
Besides fishing, Janes was active throughout his life. He played both tennis and golf, and in his early 50s, took up windsurfing. In retirement, Bob enjoyed gardening, woodworking, travel and photography.
Janes is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Marcia. Also among those surviving are his children Susan (Tailan), Michael (Linda) and Teresa, granddaughters Alison and Zoey, as well as sisters Katherine Uddenberg and Nancy Janes. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his younger brother William, who served and died in the Vietnam War.
A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, February 27, 2022, 1:30 p.m., at the Inn at Gig Harbor.
