Olivia C. Herring, born on August 23, 1935, in Centerville, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2025, at St. Joseph Hospital in Tacoma, Washington. She was 89 years old.
Olivia was the daughter of Isabelle and Jack Zorman and the sister of Joanne Evans, all of whom preceded her in death. She was also predeceased by her beloved son, Scott Brunick.
A proud graduate of Centerville High School in 1953, Olivia pursued higher education at Morningside and Briar Cliff Colleges in Sioux City, Iowa, as well as Tacoma Community College. She ultimately earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Pacific Lutheran University. In 1972, she married William "Bill" Herring, and together they shared 53 wonderful years.
In the mid-1970s, Olivia, Bill, and Scott relocated to Washington State when Scott began his junior year of high school. They eventually settled in Gig Harbor, where Bill taught at the local high school. Olivia dedicated much of her time to volunteer work at Western State Hospital and led small group self-esteem classes. She was also politically active and proudly campaigned for Governor Jay Inslee, culminating in an invitation to attend the Governor’s Ball with Bill.
Olivia had a deep appreciation for the arts and sports. She enjoyed attending the symphony, opera, ballet, plays, and cheering for her favorite teams—the Mariners, Sonics, Seahawks, and UConn basketball. A lifelong dog lover, she especially adored the Bouvier des Flandres breed and shared her home with many Bouvier companions and rescue dogs over the years.
She is survived by her devoted husband Bill Herring; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins with whom she maintained close connections; and her cherished friend and neighbor of 30 years, Kristi Steffen.
Olivia’s warmth and passion for life will be deeply missed by all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those she touched.
There will be no services at this time.
