Matthew Thomas Von Egidy

Matthew Thomas Von Egidy, 47 of Vashon, WA, passed away on Thursday, May 27, 2021, from melanoma. He was born on October 11, 1973 in Monroe, NC, and was the son of Dennis and Angela Von Egidy. 

Matthew was a man of adventure, hard work, and many talents. As a child, he lived in Wingate, NC, where he learned from and played with his four elder brothers completing the “unit” of 5. Always well-rounded; he grew up playing baseball, football, and was dedicated to his studies. He graduated from Charlotte Catholic High School in 1992. He went on to attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where he graduated with a double major in English and French. He enjoyed travelling and spending time with friends. He studied abroad in England, lived in Quebec, Charlotte, NC and Vashon, WA. He was very active as a cyclist and avid runner. He had a passion for reading, wine, socializing, coffee, and France. He loved animals, especially his best buddy and dog, Peanut. After working in Charlotte, NC, he moved to the island of Vashon in 2016 to work at the Country Store and Farm. There he became a local favorite and friend to all. He continued to work there on Saturdays but took a job at Ferguson Pipe Yard during the week. While in the Seattle area, he was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Tacoma, WA. Matthew had Jesus in his heart and devoted his time to community outreach and helping others. He fed the homeless in Seattle regularly and contributed to many charities. He was what many would call a free spirit that was always true to himself. He had friends in all places and was able to fit into almost any group. He lived each day with the philosophy of, “don’t worry, be happy”. He was full of laughter, ambition, and had a genuine love for the world and those around him.

He is survived by his parents: Dennis and Angela Von Egidy of New Salem, NC; four brothers: Wade and Dawn Von Egidy of Waxhaw, NC, James Von Egidy of Matthews, NC, Wesley and Cheryle Von Egidy of Wingate, NC, Dennis and Traci Von Egidy of New Salem, NC; one sister: Sharon and Bill Johnson of Royal Palm, FL; and his nieces and nephews: Jennifer Von Egidy, Kyle Johnson, Cory Von Egidy, Daniel Von Egidy, Monica Von Egidy, Ryan Johnson, Parker Von Egidy, Bradley Johnson, Kirby Von Egidy, Karsyn Von Egidy, Koleman Von Egidy, and Christian Johnson. Matthew leaves behind many Aunts, Uncles, cousins and friends. He will forever be loved and remembered by all. 

A funeral mass will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 5th at Our Lady of Lourdes in Monroe, NC. The family will receive friends at Holland Funeral Home directly after the service.
